Rebekka Costa – The Essence of the Unvarnished
From the Distinctive to the Staged
From early on, Rebekka Costa’s gaze was drawn to the distinctive. Even in her youth, a fascination with characterful faces compelled her to capture these expressions with her camera—a search for
the truth behind the facade that continues to define her work today. Back then, her bedroom walls became her first spaces of staging; collages from newspapers and magazines formed the foundation
for her current exploration of identity and space.
Connection as a Foundation
Following her training as a florist and formative years in gastronomy, the act of people coming together became the most connecting experience for her. Sharing enjoyment and hosting is, for her,
a form of community that she lives out today alongside her husband through pop-up restaurants and events in shifting locations. Amidst a vibrant reality with four children and her husband, she
creates works in her studio in Dielsdorf (ZH) where the search itself takes center stage.
Border Crossings and Areas of Tension
Rebekka Costa is a border crosser between fine art, installative spatial design, and a conceptual engagement with the human condition. Her work is characterized by an uncompromising curiosity
about the tensions of life: between tradition and modernity, between physical hardness and fragile intimacy.
Visible Vulnerability
Her figures are questioning beings, marked by a deep melancholy; they embody an existential vulnerability that eludes fleeting cheerfulness. This earnestness continues in her sculptures: they are
angular, raw, and unpolished. Costa breaks through the sleek perfection of her materials—even with modern high-density foam boards—to make the essence of being human visible.
